A Sri Lankan government doctor says at least forty-seven patients died Tuesday when a shell hit the only medical center in rebel-controlled territory. Tamil Tiger rebels blamed Sri Lankan government forces for the attack, but the Sri Lankan military denies the charge. It has accused the rebels of shelling their own people to gain international sympathy and support for a truce1. Also Tuesday, the military said its soldiers have now surrounded the Tamil rebels, it said twenty-five rebels were killed in fighting during the night.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has appealed to the world2 to help more than one million displaced civilians. The civilians fled their homes during fighting against Taliban militants in the northwest of the country. Mr. Zardar said he and the United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-moon3 are joining an appeal for humanitarian assistance4. The two held talks in New York on Tuesday. Mr. Ban expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in northwestern Pakistan. He said the UN is ready to help the displaced Pakistanis, but he also urged Mr. Zardar to take all necessary steps to protect the civilian population.

Officials in Afghanistan say eleven suicide bombers5 have attacked government buildings in the eastern town of Khost. At least nine people were reported killed in the bombings and the fighting that followed. Sixteen others were wounded. Officials said attackers struck the governor’s office and another building. The attackers also seized hostages6. Officials said American and afghan forces later raided7 the building. Three resistance fighters were killed. All the hostages were rescued unharmed8. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for9 the attacks. The group said it sent thirty attackers to the town. The United States military has a large base in Khost. The United States military says an American soldier was charged Tuesday with killing five other soldiers at a military base in Baghdad. An army spokesman told reporters that Sagit John Imrasil is believed to have shot the five soldiers Monday at a mental health center. The spokesman said the soldier has served three times in Iraq and was supposed to leave soon. He also said the military is investigating its mental health system whether the services offered are enough.

In other news from Iraq. Parliament is pushing the government to demand a greater share of water from Turkey10, Syria and Iran. Parliament members voted Tuesday to block any of the agreements with those countries that fail to give Iraq more water. Much of Iraqi territory is desert. Iraq gets water from the Tigris11 River which runs from Turkey and from the Euphrates12 which runs from Syria. Iraq also gets water from smaller rivers from Iran. The associated press13 reports that Iraq Water Committee chairman said water levels have fallen to dangerous low levels.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church14 led a religious service15 in Jerusalem16Tuesday. Pope17 Benedict says Christians, Jews and Moslems all call the city their spiritual home18. But he said much needs to be done to make Jerusalem a city of peace. Poke Benedict told Christians he knows the pain and suffering many of them have experienced because of the conflicts in the Middle East. The Pope said Christians leaving the area is a tragic reality. He said it brings a spiritual impoverishment19.

United Nations peace-keeper say Israel has released information on where it dropped cluster bombs20 in Lebanon three years ago. The bombs were dropped during the war between Israel and the Lebanese militant group21 Hasbila in 2006. The UN peace-keeping forces in Lebanon released the statement Tuesday. It said it received technical strike data related maps on the bombs fired by Israeli forces during the war. Both Lebanese and UN officials had urged Israel to provide all remaining landmine22 positions. Unexploded bombs23 have killed at least twenty people and wounded many others in Lebanon in the past three years.

American reporter Roxana Saberi has spoken to reporters for the first time since being released from an Iranian jail24. She said she is very happy and thankful to all the people who helped her. She told reporters in Iran that she has no immediate plans just wants to spend time with her family. Ms. Saberi’s father Riza says the family is preparing to take her back to the United States, but he did not say when. Ms. Saberi was arrested in January and later charged and found guilty of spying. Her lawyer appealed the courts decision. The thirty-two-year old reporter was released from prison on Monday.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir says his government has never aimed attacks at civilians in Darfur. He said the government had responsibility to send troops to Darfur to fight rebels, but he said the troops never fought against civilians. Mr. Bashir made the comment to the BBC News Agency25. The international criminal court26 accused Mr. Bashir of organizing a campaign of rape,murder and other crimes against civilians in Darfur.

A Somali Human Rights Group says the past five days of fighting in Mogadishu has killed at least one hundred thirteen people. The Almond Human Rights Organization says another three hundred were wounded in the fighting. The Group said unofficial27 counts by its workers show that at least twenty-seven thousand people have fled the Somali capital
